The Quiet Gardeners

Vision

Everyone participates in the caretaking of our natural resources, and values them like family.

Philosophy

At the very heart of all the work I do is a deep-rooted belief in the importance of:

Preserving and honoring ecosystems: Improving the use of outdoor spaces to support healthy, natural ecosystems, and how these ecosystems can enhance human interactions, well-being and sustainability.

Stewardship: Consider how to best support plants, animals, healthy air and water, and become better stewards of the earth, which is our most precious resource.

Artistry: Approaching each design challenge from an artistic point of view – asking, How can this land function better and be beautiful?

Observation: Observing and listening deeply to the needs of our clients and users of the space.

Art

As an art form, landscape design involves working with materials to shape and construct something better — ultimately creating a positive experience for the user of the space that is also in harmony with the natural ecosystem.

My materials, for which I have the deepest respect, are the elements of earth: plants, soil, water, wood, stone, air, and sunlight.

Science

I take into careful consideration our scientific knowledge about soils, climate, weather, sun/shade, orientation, wind patterns, seasonal highs and lows, horticultural zones for plants, the strength of the building materials being used, and how they are being used.

As well, I factor in drainage and engineering challenges, projecting future plant growth habits and materials durability, both in the near future and over time.

Meg Whitmer

As a landscape architect for over four decades, I consider myself a mindful earthcare professional who weaves together natural and human ecosystems as seamlessly as possible. I work with the beautiful materials of earth: plants, soil, water, wood, and stone.

My work has been influenced by the artistry of many other mentors, teachers, authors and scientists over the years. This begins with deep gratitude and reverence for our First Nation people who were the earliest stewards of the land.

I carry this love of the earth deep in my DNA, and wish to inspire and mentor the next generation to be conscious stewards of our most precious resource. The work evolves, the earth itself evolves, and my deepest wish is that we, as humans, evolve along with it.
